Headteacher Roundup February 2021
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you to our families for your amazing support this half term. This has been an intense time for us all, but as ever we have come together.
I am also happy to tell you that we have now begun a program of our staff being vaccinated against the virus. Along with our Covid LFD testing program, PPE, bubbles and other extensive precautions we really hope 'normality' is within touching distance for school life.
We are due for a government announcement regarding the opening of mainstream schools on February 22nd and hope that with infection rates dropping, all schools will open at some point in March (March 8th has been suggested but we know things can change!) This should see us fully resourced and ready for all students to return safely. I will keep you updated when we find out more.
Apart from the incredible work of our testing volunteers there are so many other good news stories at Birch Wood over this difficult period. I hope you've enjoyed hearing about our 'remote learning heroes' and have experienced the dedication of staff via our remote learning programs; further information can now be found about this on our website front page, just look for the tab 'Remote Learning'. Teacher's and support staff are working hard to reach out to those students at home as well as continue to provide the same quality provision in school. We have on average 50% of students in school at any given time, which is above the national average for special schools, which is 35%. Special schools are in a very unique place during lockdown 3 and we have strived to find the right balance of safety and on site provision. We understand that families are experiencing very challenging times and I want to remind you that we are here to support you through any difficulties, so please reach out if things are becoming less manageable.
I would also like to thank all our staff who have supported us with our Welfare Packages, which have helped a number of our families at this particularly difficult time. A further special thank you to the local community for their help with this too, especially Adam King, Samworth Brothers, Sharon Brown and Morrisons for their donations. We know this kindness has been very much appreciated.
I hope you all have a fantastic half term and please stay safe.
